I know my heading sounds a bit naive. I mean, I picked up a book about a brothel. Obviously I knew there was going to be sex, right? Yup, I totally expected sex. And just so I'm clear, I don't have a problem with porn. I just wasn't expecting this memoir to be almost nothing but porn. I was expecting more about what it was like to work in the industry itself, reflections on it and society's attitudes toward prostitution and sex. There is a smidge of that in here. However, it is filled with very graphic descriptions of at least a dozen sexual encounters. And while I don't doubt that the author's mother-in-law participated in some pretty crazy acts as a prostitute, there were a few stories that raised my BS detector. Mostly the fact that she stumbled into a fire station to use a phone and every single fireman on duty not only wanted to buy time with her, but had the cash to do it. I come from a family of firefighters and while I don't doubt for a second that many of the firefighters I know would be happy to have a go with a professional, all of them having the dough to pay for it...that's a real stretch.I also didn't like that it was not told as an actual memoir. I like when people tell their own stories. We get their voice and their point of view. Someone else telling the stories has a certain distance that I don't like as much. Not to mention that it was just odd to think about the fact that the author was talking an awful lot about her mother-in-law's vagina.

It reads like a journal with an instruction manual. Angelien has many experiences in her life. She does not seem to stay at one job for very long. Her beauty seems to be her driving factor for attracting the repeat clients. This lifestyle apparently began at an early age and not Angelien's doing. Circumstances in her life and choices along the way carved this path of life for her. When you open one door it opens many other doors. Angelien got to experience many different sexual parties. While the young girls experienced problems with jealousy, Angelien did not. Maybe her age had something to do with it. Instead, it was the men who became too attached to her. Angelien had a steady following of regulars. It seems once in the industry you never leave. Once comfortable and acquainted with this environment you continue to get offers for various other types of jobs entertaining men. This lifestyle was easy for her since she was popular and requested by the same men.Typical of a man to turn his nose at a women for working at a brothel when it should be the men being judged for needing to go to a brothel to begin with. Angelien slept with 170 men in one month and that was only her. One woman was servicing the needs of all these men. Very rarely did she get pleasure out of the encounter. Men and women are so quick to judge, but men want sex and apparently will do anything to acquire it. Does not seem to matter if the men are gay, married, engaged, dating, or professionals. Men from all walks of life want and need sex.I was disappointed the story did not discuss how Angelien had two sons and with whom. No previous history was disclosed other than her first few encounters with boys she dated at fifteen.

I wanted to give the book a four star review, simply because it contained information from a woman's inside point of view as a sex trade worker-but it lacked the most essential information-how the author felt from an emotional point of view;therefore the emotional appeal was lacking. The dehumanizing and objectification of the sex workers, is ripe for emotional writing; although I did not find it.Informational rating:The information was there, in fact the book was very detail oriented but the details lingered heavily on sex, not upon what sex trade does to people. The author described what the characters did, but did not provide enough content for you to identify with them on a human level; to either love them or hate them. The author's reliance on sexual detail,to the detriment of human emotion, lends a pornographic aura to the overall effect. The character development was also limited.Preferences:For those who like journalistic, factual style writing that is distanced from the emotional content-this would be a five star real.

Confidante: The Brothel is a great read. I like any story that has an element of truth. The cover is hot and I like the way the story is told and the realness of it all. I have recently become a fan of the erotica genre of story as I was looking to break through that genre because that was listed as a part of my book club review and I had interviewed some authors who wrote in this genre. I really am an avid reader who enjoys good writing and I feel this is an example of good writing. I like the fact that this story is written by the daughter in law of the main character as she has revealed her life to her over the years and she seeing the unique of her story convinced her to allow her to share her story. I highly applaud the sheroe of this great storyline as she opens herself up to the reader and share a very compelling and touching story of a mother doing what she feels is needful to take care of her children; and the fact that she enjoys sex; take nothing from this who plot. Love this story will be checking out some of the others in the trilogy in the near future

Being so different then my life, I have always wondered how or why people would join a brothel. I also wondered what it was like. With an open mind I begin reading this book. And this book drew me into her world with the first sentence. This book is not for shy people who do not like to read about sex. This book ran very smoothly from story to story and about her life as she worked one month in a brothel. How she got into it and the reasons why. This book opened up a world that I have no clue about. It was a very interesting read and will finish all 3 books. In fact as soon as I got done with this read I downloaded book 2 and finished that in one day as well.
